Mastic except for its use as a medicine is also widely used to improve taste in cooking and bakery.

Warning: Mastic powder should be kept in a cool place, below 17C / 63F, or preferably in the refrigerator. During Spring / Summer / Autumn the heat in Greece (and possibly in your country) may reach high temperatures. As a result, if the mastic powder is exposed to heat for some time, it might stick together and become lumpy. If this happens, please put the mastic with the jar for a few hours in the deep freezer and then tap it on a hard surface, so it will become powder again. If the mastic powder during transport is exposed to high temperatures for a prolonged time, it might stick together and could possibly become a yellow lump. In this case, put the jar for a few hours in the deep freezer and then while still frozen put smaller pieces of the mastic lump in a blender and make it powder again
When you make it powder again, it will be perfectly all right and absolutely safe to use since mastic starts losing some of its properties only if it is heated above 80 degrees Celsius (176 Fahrenheit).
*ATTENTION. If you are not willing to take the risk to get the powder stuck especially during the hot months, please consider the alternative to buy mastic in Small Tears and either use it as it is -for pharmaceutical use- or you could ground it into powder yourself.

Mastic is the natural resin that is secreted like a tear from the trunk of the mastic tree (Pistacia Lentiscus var. Chia), which thrives and is cultivated exclusively -from all over the world- only in the South part of Chios island. It contains at least 70 different substances, mainly terpenoids, with beneficial properties in diseases of the gastrointestinal system and the regulation of cholesterol and possibly diabetes. Mastic has antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action. Hippocrates and Dioscorides, among others, 2,500 years ago, used and recommended Chios mastic in cases of stomach pain as well as protection of oral hygiene.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Committee for Herbal Medicine (HMPC) have approved the use of mastic as a traditional herbal remedy for the symptoms of mild digestive disorders”.
To date, dozens of scientific studies have been published that generally attribute the following to mastic:
- Protection of the health of the gastrointestinal system, due to its action against Helicobacter pylori, an important factor for gastric ulcers.
- Protection of the health of the oral cavity. It also fights bad breath. There is a strong correlation between mastic and results against various unpleasant conditions of the oral cavity such as plaque, caries, periodontitis and gingivitis.
